The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, you'll find a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
