The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Comes After Poor Response
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the necessity for a distinct vision.
Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
Trend of Key Hires
The news mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete content from the president's communication:
Team—
I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It revealed the need for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our audience.
The trust in this project grows every day. To further the incredible advancement you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of discussions, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
His management and expertise in the PVP shooter field is vast, having spent the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most popular series in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to keep observing the progress of the game in the time to come.
The President

Title Information and Vision
Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting step forward on the category."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description states. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, stakes, and tests that change every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, gamble everything, and hope your squad can earn top ranking? The option is up to you."
The game has not yet received an official launch window or supported systems, but players can expect further news as creation advances.
