A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such drugs should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
