'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Galbraith resumes contest with Manchester City.

Ethan Galbraith breaks into a smile as he remembers the thrilling closing stages of his team's remarkable turnaround victory against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. That match culminated with Galbraith picking up a supporter's spectacles amid the post-goal scrum.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith struck the post with a long-range shot from outside the box, and Cameron Burgess promptly converted the rebound before charging toward the crowd to revel in the moment, with supporters congregating around the players.

Remarkable Recovery

The result completed an extraordinary comeback given the team had trailed 2-0 during the latter period. During the celebrations, there was some minor mishaps. The midfielder recalled, "There was a fan shouting out and we were wondering: 'What's he on about here?' Then we saw the glasses. It was a bit of banter putting them on. We are on the pitch as footballers but we're humans, too, so to have a laugh with the fans is always good."

Manchester City Challenge

The result secured a next round game at home against Manchester City on Wednesday, opponents Galbraith came close against at the comparable phase of the FA Cup with the London side in February. The athletic midfielder had a prime vantage point when his former team took the lead in remarkable manner, with Jamie Donley's long-range effort from about way out going in via the woodwork and the Stefan Ortega. Many argued that it was recorded as an own goal.

"You would have wished they would've awarded it to him for taking the effort on from that distance," commented Galbraith, who played in the middle before moving to right wing-back after the team changed formation. That meant getting to grips with City's winger, with whom he traded tops, and the player was among the City players who paid tribute to the way Orient attacked the game.

Guardiola's System

"Physically they are exceptional but even the fundamentals and simple things, they can just perform consistently," Galbraith says. "It appears that they always find their target and they understand how to control and take the sting out of a game. You can believe you're holding your own and then suddenly they will just thread a ball between defenders without you even noticing. You have to be alert throughout of the game. It requires a tough attitude and concentration just to stay in the game."

New Chapter

The Welsh side pushed to sign Galbraith in January and fought off rivals to bring him in in the summer in a £1.5m deal. He became a favorite as a fans' favourite across a couple of years at Orient and has quickly done the same in south Wales. At Orient he linked up again with Richie Wellens, who earlier gave Galbraith his debut prolonged spell in professional games on loan at Doncaster from Manchester United. Then came a temporary move at lower division Salford City, before he departed Old Trafford.

Growth Journey

"I was likely a bit naive going into professional soccer. I think numerous professionals would say youth team games is completely distinct. Sometimes it feels like play is circulated without real physicality. There's not many physical contests. Once you start playing first-team football you have to adapt rapidly."

Country Call-ups

He has demonstrated that development for his team and nation, excelling for his national side, who could still reach the international competition next summer via the qualifying rounds and for whom he has started the past five games, including both legs encounters against the German national team. Ian Baraclough, Galbraith's ex- international manager, paid him the highest praise, saying he was Northern Ireland's "midfield general" given how he handles the football and his eye for a game-changing assist.

Starting Out

This marks quite the ride for the kid from the Queens Park estate in Glengormley, just outside Northern Ireland's main city, who used to see his parent, the elder Galbraith, also a central player, play for his father's team.

Manchester United Experience

The player's only game for Manchester United came in the away trip in 2019, a European competition trip to Astana, where they played on an plastic turf and the arena covering was shut owing to conditions of -15C. "This represented a lengthy journey and it was freezing," he recalls, chuckling. "The preceding week, several youth players and I practiced as a group, so that aided our adjustment. Just to accompany the senior squad and make an appearance at the end was amazing."

Departing Old Trafford

What was the challenge was it to leave United, the club he transferred from aged a teenager? "This turned out quite easy, because I arrived at the moment where I understood I wasn't going to make it at first-team level. I'm hugely grateful for the time I spent there but it got to the point where I thought I had to take a different path, join a smaller club and play professional soccer. Now I'm slowly progressing again."

Welsh Adaptation

It is the early part of the afternoon at the team's practice facility but Galbraith has a commitment at 5pm: a road rules assessment, another move in the direction of getting on the road. Until recently to Sketty, the mid-twenties player was a constant rider in Swansea's so-called fun bus, a team vehicle driven by club employees, the transport team, which transports players to and from sessions and fixtures.

"It's myself the Portuguese player, another squad member, the midfielder – a former passenger used to be in it but has begun using his own car. It's enjoyable to spend time with the lads but I'm planning to be the following person out of the minibus and on the road. Franco enjoys practical jokes; he's always up to all sorts."

Public Engagement

While playing for Leyton Orient, Galbraith would mix with followers on public transport after commuting at Brentwood. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
