British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
